After months of lobbying, the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Trade has accepted European Wood as a counter part in regulatory talks. The trilateral Building Experts Committee established between the U.S. / Canada and Japan in 1994 has been instrumental in opening the market for North American Wooden Products, the biggest success arguably being the equivalency agreement between JAS and WCLIB/COFI standards signed in 1996. MLIT is now recognizing the need for a similar dialogue with Europe and has finally accepted to start discussions with European Wood on how to proceed. European Wood has, furthermore, had a number of meetings with the delegation of the European Commission in Japan and prepared extensive written material to facilitate the decision making process. They are now actively considering how to get involved in the process.
